INSTRUCTION: Structure of an argument.
You can start ANYWHERE. There is no formula. There is no pattern.
Here is one argument done three ways.
Start with the Warrant
As a rule, when people walk down a staircase, they tend to hold onto the bannister to steady them as they descend. Arthur was found with a glass in his left hand. The bannister in the Volupides home is on the left side. Common sense suggests that if he had been descending the staircase, he would have had his glass in his right hand. Therefore, I believe that Queenie is lying. |
Start with the Evidence
Arthur was found with a glass in his left hand. The bannister in the Volupides home is on the left side. As a rule, when people walk down a staircase, they tend to hold onto the bannister to steady them as they descend. Common sense suggests that if he had been descending the staircase, he would have had his glass in his right hand. Therefore, I believe that Queenie is lying. |
Start with the Claim
I believe that Queenie is lying in her report about what happened to her husband Arthur. |
